last night i saw "iraq in fragments"
wow. what an amazingly profound documentary, a work of "poetic agitation," according to the village voice.
(for the new release's trailer, follow this link.)
it's really hard to believe that iraq in fragments really is a documentary: james longley's award-winning film is so intimate, & so painful, you just wish the young boys who anchor the film were actors playing parts, & able to extricate themselves from the nightmarish conditions that they occupy.
i'm truly afraid now to read about devil bush's plan for a military "surge" in that violence-shredded nation.
best to watch this work, though, instead of bush's surely insipid save the village by destroying it "plan" for iraq. brrrrrrr...
a cool local angle on all of this, btw, is that the unembedded filmmaker james longley regularly calls my boss at kcsb 91.9 fm, elizabeth robinson, when he needs to get a story out of the middle east by way of grassroots, independent media outlets. she's that great a journalist specializing in the region.
elizabeth is always so quick to turn these stories around, edit them into a manageable time for radio, upload them on the web, & then mass-announce their availability to other journalists around the globe. really a quite inspiring professional arrangement...
iraq in fragments was presented last night to a near-capacity crowd, courtesy of university of california at santa barbara's arts & lectures film series. elizabeth tried to bring longley to campus along with the film, but unfortunately his schedule would not allow for it.
